This calculator allows for quick and easy determinations for dextrose and protein requirements when working with parenteral nutrition. It also allows for fractional amounts of lipid to accurately tailor the total caloric needs of the patient.

Summary screens produce informative summations of the final solution composition.  Examples include total kcal, the number of kcal from dextrose, kcal from lipid, grams of protein, and the non-protein calories to nitrogen ratio.

Also included is an easy to use osmolarity calculator. Great for simple IV admixtures or complex TPN solutions.

TPN  Calculator    top
First step: Enter the weight, height, and age. Second step: Select a Stress factor and an option for protein requirement. You may also select a lipid and enter the desired volume of the lipid. Then hit the 'Calculate' button. Third step: After hitting the calculate button you will see the following summary. Now hit the 'Next' button to continue.
Step 4:  Review the estimated daily requirements for dextrose and protein at the top of the screen. Then enter values that are within the ranges listed at the top in 'Final analysis' section. Then hit the 'Calculate' button. Summary Screen: This is the final screen showing the final totals for dextrose, protein, lipid, total kcal etc.  
 
 
Osmolarity Calculator      top
Using the built-in Osmolarity Calculator:  Click the title bar on the first screen of the TPN calculator to access the Calculators drop down list. Select 'Osmolarity' from the list. Step 1:  this program can calculate the osmolarity of an IV admixture, IV piggyback, or TPN. If you calculating the osmolarity of a TPN, you would ignore this first screen. Step 2:  The following screens will show a simple example of calculating the osmolarity of an IVPB. The IV will contain 3 grams of Calcium chloride added to 250ml of D5W. First select D5W from the drop down list on the opening screen.  
Step 3:  Enter the volume of the IVPB (250 in this case). You also have the option to lock the final volume to the amount listed by clicking the little box. In this example we decided to lock the final volume. Hit the 'Next' button to continue. Step 4:  Because this example is for an IVPB, you can ignore the TPN additive screen. Click the 'Next' button. Step 5:  In this example we must add 3 grams of Calcium Chloride. This would be 30 ml of 10% CaCl. Note the entry below. Next, hit the 'Calculate' button. 
Step 6: The final screen will show the total volume of all additives as well as the total osmolarity of the solution. Remember that the base solution also contributes to the osmolarity as well as any additives. Note: If you click the 'Additives' button on the previous screen you will see the osmolarity contributed by each additive. If you click the 'Comments' button, you will see a general comment regarding the final osmolarity.
