Infection

Pharyngitis  Possible therapeutic alternatives
Pharyngitis: "Strept throat" (Usual duration of treatment: 10 days.  5 days for Zithromax) Common pathogens
PenVk 250-500mg every 6 hours  or  
Benzathine penicillin 1.2 mu IM x 1.
Erythomycin 500mg four times daily  or    
Ceftin 250mg orally twice daily  or 
Vantin 100 mg orally twice daily  or
Cefzil 500mg orally once daily  or
Clarithromycin 250mg to 500 mg twice daily or
Zithromax 500mg x 1, then 250mg orally once daily x 4 days.
Pharyngitis: Gonococcal Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Ceftriaxone 125mg IM + doxycycline 100mg orally twice daily for 7 days
Ciprofloxacin 500mg orally  x 1, then  doxycycline 100mg orally twice daily for 7 days
Azithromycin (Zithromax) 2 grams orally x 1.

Sore throat:
Cepacol (benzocaine 10mg + menthol 2mg):  Dissolve one lozenge in mouth every 2-4hours as needed.
Chloraseptic throat spray (phenol 1.4 %):  Spray 5 times onto throat, gums or canker sore every 2-4 hours as needed.
